Consultant occupational physician Subhashis Basu reflects on his experience as a medical adviser to a leading professional football club and to the English Football League during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

My club’s first season back in the top tier of English football since 2006–07 was all going smoothly; it was performing well above predictions (although not of course exceeding our own expectations) and pushing for a place in European competition. But in early 2020, we heard the first reports of a mysterious new illness in Wuhan, China, posing a serious public health threat with rapid community spread. Soon after, the first questions from my colleagues came as to whether this was going to be a concern for the general public …

 

Dr Subhashis Basu is a consultant occupational physician, emergency medicine doctor and club doctor at Sheffield United Football Club. He acts as a medical adviser to the English Football League.
