PERSONAL LEARNING ZONE

Summary:

FEATURED ARTICLE

This issue of Occupational Health [at Work] features a Personal Learning Zone (PLZ) article recommended for continuing professional development (CPD). The assignment questions, ‘Personal learning statement’ and ‘Certificate of engagement’ are available to subscribers at ohaw.co/AWPcpd. These will also be stored in your password-protected PLZ. The PLZ will help you document your own CPD. Occupational health physicians and nurses, occupational hygienists and other professionals can use the resource in support of their specialism’s revalidation or CPD requirements.

Pages 19–26. Macular disease and work (part 1 and part 2) There are various forms of macula disease, but they all cause loss of central vision, which can have implications for work. OH professionals should understand the basic clinical features and, importantly, what measures can be put in place to support workers affected by these potentially disabling conditions.

ADDITIONAL CPD

The following articles, news and research items are suggested reading for CPD and professional revalidation. Subscribers can complete their online Personal Learning Zone CPD record at ohaw.co/AWPcpd

Pages 03. The UK trial of a four-day week has generated considerable media interest. However, practitioners should look very carefully at the limitations of the study design when interpreting the results.

Pages 06. Employers should support the financial wellbeing of staff as part of their overall approach to employee health and wellbeing, especially during the cost-of-living crisis.

Pages 08-12. An employer’s actual or constructive knowledge of an employee’s disability is not, by itself, sufficient to trigger the duty to make reasonable adjustments; it also needs to know that a provision, criterion or practice is likely to place an employee at a substantial disadvantage compared with a non-disabled employee.

Pages 27-32. When designing in-house psychological-support services for staff it is important to have a long-term plan rather than a short-term fix.

Pages 33-35. Gender reassignment is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010 (EqA). However, it is also important to note that people who hold gender-critical beliefs can also qualify for protection under the EqA.

Pages 36-38. Our compendium of recent research includes a qualitative study on the role ‘significant others’ might play at an occupational health consultation, an analysis of older workers’ decision-making on the disclosure of information about their support needs, and a link between a healthy lifestyle and a lower risk of ‘long COVID’.
