Highlights from the International Commission on Occupational Health congress held in Dublin recently
This is part one of our review of highlights from the 32nd triennial congress of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH)1.
Asbestos burden underestimated The global burden of asbestos-related disease is more than twice as big as previous estimates suggested, with around 250,000 deaths at year, figures previewed at ICOH 2018 revealed. ICOH president Professor Jukka Takala, used the congress’s ‘global policy forum’ to announce the new figures, which show that previous World Health Organization (WHO) and International Labour Organization (ILO) statistics on the global burden of asbestos-related disease had considerably underestimated the scale of the problem. Takala said the latest figures ‘show that the WHO and ILO estimate of about 108,000 fatalities [a year] is really out-dated
